Summary Care Records (SCR) has been acknowledged as an effective tool to assist community pharmacists to treat patients effectively and efficiently.
Every pharmacy that is accessing SCR is required to have a Summary Care Record Governance Person (SGP); this can be any member of staff employed by the pharmacy.
The Summary Care Record Governance Person (SGP) role ensures that pharmacy professionals who access the SCR only do so for patients they are providing care for and patients who have given permission for their SCR to be viewed.
The role of the SGP involves checking that:
- SCRs are only accessed for patients of their pharmacy
- all emergency access views are legitimate
- appropriate action is taken to address incorrect use of SCR
- issues involving inappropriate use are escalated
NHS digital has developed an online resource to support SGP in viewing and processing SCR access alerts, accessing alert reports, closing alerts or instigating an investigation where appropriate.
