Beclometasone inhaler for mouth ulcers

Q. I have received an FP10D Dental prescription for Clenil Modulite 50mcg inhaler. Can this be dispensed? What is the indication?

A. Beclometasone inhaler can be used, off licence, for the management of oral ulceration and inflammation.

The dental practitioner’s formulary (DPF), as listed in Part XVIIA of the England and Wales tariff, has the following listing:

Beclometasone Pressurised Inhalation BP
          50micrograms/metered inhalation CFC-free as:
                     Clenil Modulite®

Dental prescriptions written as Clenil Modulite will therefore be passed for payment and are clinically appropriate.

GP prescriptions do not have to specify a brand name.
