Q: I have received a vet prescription for gabapentin which is written on normal vet headed notepaper, is this legal?

A: Yes it is acceptable. Veterinary prescriptions for a schedule 2 or 3 controlled drug do not have to be on a standardised FP10PCD form, however certain legal requirements must be present for it to be legally valid.  Below are the set of requirements specific to veterinary prescriptions and also requirements that are shared with controlled drug prescriptions for humans.

Vet

Vet/Human

Standardised CD forms are not required for a vet prescription but it must have stated

‘prescribed for the treatment of an animal or heard under my care ‘

Both human and vet prescriptions for CDs are valid for 28 days. Repeatable prescriptions (e.g. repeatable x 3) are NOT allowed for either type of prescriptions for schedule 2 or 3 controlled drugs.

Full name and address of the owner plus the name of the animal to whom the CD prescribed is to be administered

Name and form of the drug, even if only one form exists.

RCVS registration number of the prescribing veterinary surgeon

Amount of the product prescribed, in both words and figures.

Vet prescriptions should be retained at the pharmacy for five years and NOT submitted to the relevant NHS agency

Strength of the preparation (if more than one strength is available)

Dose to be administered including an amount and a frequency (‘take as directed’ or ‘take as required’ are not acceptable).
