SSP077 Cefalexin 125mg/5ml oral solution sugar free

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) have issued a Serious Shortage Protocol (SSP) for Cefalexin 125mg/5ml oral solution sugar free in response to a significant ongoing supply disruption.

The SSP will enable community pharmacies in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to supply patients with a different formulation as per the document below.

It allows pharmacies to supply 1x 5ml Cefalexin 125mg/5ml oral solution as a replacement for 1x 5ml Cefalexin 125mg/5ml oral solution sugar free, if unobtainable. The total quantity supplied in accordance with this protocol is to be equivalent to the number of days supplied on the original prescription.

For diabetic patients, pharmacists should supply sugar free options where possible. If this is not available, patients/carers should be informed that there is a small amount of sugar contained in the product supplied, which may marginally affect blood sugar control, but do not withhold treatment.

SSP077 for Cefalexin 125mg/5ml oral solution sugar free will be in operation from Tuesday 10th December 2024 to Friday 31st January 2025.

Please note that the SSP may be amended or revoked at any time, so contractors must ensure that the SSP is still valid before each supply.
