But with the excitement of spring, comes the prominence of the hay fever season. Hay fever can start as early as January; but is commonly worse between late March and September, particularly when it is warm, humid and windy - this is when the pollen count is at its highest[1].

But it’s not just hay fever, known as seasonal rhinitis, which is an allergic reaction to pollen from grass, trees and weeds that affects those suffering wit allergies; we estimate that allergies as a whole affects the lives of up to 41 million people in the UK and allergic disease has been described as a ‘modern epidemic’ by the World Health Organisation. Between five and eight percent of children in the UK live with a food allergy.

What causes allergy is yet to be determined but research continues into what lies behind the increase in this disease across the modern world.  Allergies are most common in children, but they can occur at any age, and they can run in families – if you have an allergy it is likely that one of your parents had allergy too[2].

Being at the centre of community health, it is vital that you are able to support those customers suffering allergy symptoms and provide them with the treatment they require by offering helpful advice and a product range fit for various ages and requirements.  With your knowledge and understanding you are perfectly positioned to assist your customers with their hay fever and allergy needs, particularly as we enter peak hay fever season.
